Network Engineer

Job Description Summary

The Network Engineer is an IT specialist who constructs and maintains the network and network-based solutions. Their duties include network engineering, implementation and administration. This person is responsible, as part of a team, for the engineering and administration of routers, switches, firewalls, security systems, wireless equipment and voice services within a WAN that spans the globe. These systems include a variety of technologies from Cisco Systems and Palo Alto Networks.

The Network Engineer will assist Help Desk, Security, and Infrastructure personnel in troubleshooting end-user or server-based network problems.

This role would be ideal for a person from a traditional IT infrastructure and network who wishes to transition to a fast-growing Hybrid-Cloud environment. This person is a critical component of a small team that will make a big impact on the company’s future success.

Tasks

  • Deploy, patch, and optimize all network equipment in the company across 15+ locations, 2 data centers, and an MPLS-connected wide-area-network.

  • Oversee the patching (done with a third-party firm) of all network equipment and ensure adequate testing.

  • Monitor network performance and integrity.

  • Resolve issues escalated by troubleshooting cloud and local infrastructure.

  • Automate tasks and monitor their effectiveness.

  • Mentor team members on technical issues.

  • Create, oversee and test security measures (e.g. access authentication and disaster recovery).

  • Communicate with users when needed.

  • Maintain complete technical documentation.

  • Suggest improvements to network performance, capacity, and scalability.

Skills & Abilities

  • Industry-related experience as a Network Engineer or Senior Network Engineer.

  • Professional certification (e.g. CCNP).

  • Solid background in network administration and architecture.

  • In-depth understanding of communication protocols (mainly TCP/IP) and routing protocols (e.g. BGP, OSPF).

  • Familiarity with access control models and network security.

  • Experience with network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis tools (e.g. SolarWinds network tools).

  • Solid understanding of network operating systems (Cisco IOS).

  • Strong understanding of hybrid-cloud networking, WAN concepts, and firewalling.

  • Sharp troubleshooting skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Organizational and mentoring skills.

  • Strong communication and time-management skills.

  • Knowledge of coding languages for scripting (e.g Python, Powershell, BASHl).

Responsibilities

Engineering Services (50%)

  • Deploy network equipment (new, upgrades, etc)
  • Respond to problems, evaluate requests, institute changes as needed.
  • Ensure all connectivity across global WAN
  • Suggest changes for optimizing, modernizing and maintaining premium network performance and stability.

Support, Network and Cloud Resources/Services (40%)

  • Support all company network resources, project teams access, and resource interconnectivity.
  • Monitor for security-related issues.
  • Work with, and/or oversee, 3rd party contractors commissioned to assist network engineering with patching.
  • Maintain network alerts and configuration backups (Solarwinds).

Documentation (10%)

  • Build up network documentation to be used by Engineering staff.

Education

BS/BA in computer science, or equivalent
